There is a Live CD available, and it works great on the Eee. Read the Mandriva section of the wiki at EeeUser.com for a few helpful tips and tweaks. Good luck!

I've got a late model 701 4G which shipped with XP, but I removed it (after discovering that 800x480 and 4GB is really too small for an XP SP3 + Office 2007 SP1 installation. That left me with 250MB free).

I installed Mandriva Spring 2008.1 Linux in its place, which has out-of-the-box support for the Eee PC's webcam, wireless, and Fn+X ACPI buttons. It's far more fully-featured than the stock Xandros Linux, while still looking fine at 800x480 and leaving more than 1.5GB free on the SSD after installing everything I wanted.

... might even get DOSbox running on it ;)

As I posted on my blog:

1. We don't have 3G in my hometown of 100,000, so
2. It'd be more expensive monthly for no improvement in speeds
3. I already have a better GPS in my car, and a rugged one for Geocaching
4. I can't do anything with 16GB or memory that I can't do with my current 8GB (my nearly 18GB of music won't completely fit on either)
5. My 1st-gen iPhone will be getting the rest of the new features with the OS 2.0 update

So ... no dice. I'll probably pick up the next one, though.

Does the iPhone still ask if you want to put it into Airline Mode, or does being "iPhone Certified" remove that annoyance completely? I have another dock that is shielded to prevent EDGE interference, but the iPhone doesn't know that, apparently, and insists on complaining every time I put it in.

In my experience, I'd say $179 is inexpensive (today) for a pocketable digicam with usable image quality.

I would expect only throwaway quality at ~$100, and would start assuming good quality once you hit ~$250.
